Powerful Black Hole Winds Linked to Unexpected X-ray Variability
Study of the X-ray light flickering of quasars —supermassive black holes actively devouring matter— reveals powerful winds of outflowing material blasted away from the system and opens new opportunities for learning about the fierce and dynamic conditions in the inner regions of rapidly growing black holes…
Astronomers challenge 50-year-old quasar law
Compelling evidence that the structure of matter surrounding supermassive black holes has changed over cosmic time has been uncovered by an international team of astronomers. If true, the research led by the National Observatory of Athens and published today in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society would challenge a fundamental law which has existed for almost five decades…
Twinkle, Twinkle, Big Black Hole
We know that the light emitted as matter falls and disappears into a supermassive black hole is highly variable with time. Is this twinkling a random process or does it contain information on the physical properties of the system, such as the mass of the black hole or the rate at which matter falls onto it? An international team of astronomers from Greece, Germany and Italy addresses this question in a new study recently released to the scientific community. Check out the full press release here.
